If you experience shock-like or burning lower back pain, you may have sciatica. This medical condition typically occurs when a ruptured or herniated disc is pressing on a nerve root. Other possible causes include a tumor, cyst, or degeneration of the sciatic nerve root. In the most extreme cases of sciatica, when the nerve is pinched between the disc and an adjacent bone, symptoms can include numbness and some loss of motor control over the leg due to interruption of nerve signaling. Treatment options will vary, depending on what is causing the sciatica and how long it has been present.
