Drug Interactions With Morphine Sulfate

Several medications can cause potentially dangerous drug interactions with morphine sulfate, including antidepressants, sleep medications, and barbiturates. These interactions could increase your risk of serious side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty breathing. To avoid any serious complications, it is important that you talk to your healthcare provider about possible drug interactions that may apply to you.

Morphine Sulfate Interactions: An Overview

Morphine sulfate can potentially interact with a number of other medications. Some of the medicines that may lead to drug interactions with morphine sulfate include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Alcoholic beverages (or other products that contain alcohol)
  • Alvimopan (Entereg®)
  • Antidepressant medications
  • Antihistamines (including many non-prescription cold, cough, allergy, motion sickness, and sleep medications)
  • Antipsychotics, including (but not limited to):

 

 

  • Barbiturates, such as:

 

    • Amobarbital (Amytal®)
    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)

 

  • Benzodiazepine sedatives, such as:

 

 

  • Muscle relaxants, such as:

 

 

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), including:
