Back Pain Home > Generic Ultram

There are generic versions of Ultram (tramadol) available. Generic Ultram is sold under the names tramadol, tramadol hydrochloride, or tramadol HCL. Several companies manufacture a generic version, including Alphapharm, Teva Pharmaceuticals, and Sandoz. Most pharmacies only carry the generic versions, as insurance companies typically will not cover the cost of brand-name Ultram.

Is a Generic Version of Ultram Available?

Ultram® (tramadol hydrochloride) is a prescription pain medication. It is an opioid (morphine-like) analgesic with the potential for abuse and is classified as a controlled substance.
Brand-name Ultram is made by Janssen Ortho, LLC, and is marketed by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc. In addition, generic versions of Ultram are available.

Strengths of Generic Ultram

Generic Ultram is sold under the names "tramadol," "tramadol hydrochloride," or "tramadol HCl," and is available in one strength (50 mg).

Who Makes It?

Several different companies make generic Ultram, such as:
  • Actavis US
  • Alphapharm
  • Mallinckrodt, Inc.
  • Mutual Pharmaceutical Co., Inc.
  • Sandoz
  • Teva Pharmaceuticals
  • Watson Laboratories.

Can I Get "Real" Ultram?

Many (if not most) pharmacies do not carry brand-name Ultram. Generic Ultram is significantly less expensive, and many insurance companies require people to use the generic products. If you are willing to pay full price, as your insurance will probably not cover brand-name Ultram, your pharmacy may be willing to stock the brand-name version for you.
However, many healthcare providers view requests for brand-name narcotics as a sign of abuse or diversion (selling the drugs to someone else), because brand-name drugs of abuse usually have a higher street value than their generic versions. In many situations, a request for a brand-name drug of abuse instead of a generic may arouse your healthcare provider's suspicions.
