What Is Hydrocodone Used For?

Can It Be Used in Children?

Hydrocodone pain medications are not approved for use in children, as they have not been adequately studied for this age group. Despite what the prescribing information for some hydrocodone cough syrups may state, no hydrocodone cough medication has been proven safe or effective for children under six years old. Some of the older, unapproved hydrocodone products have dosing recommendations for children as young as two years old. Such recommendations should be disregarded, and such unapproved products should be avoided.

Off-Label Uses for Hydrocodone

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend hydrocodone for something other than relieving pain (this would be known as an "off-label" use). At this time, however, there are no universally accepted off-label uses for hydrocodone.
