Hydrocodone is a narcotic commonly found in prescription pain and cough medications. It is a controlled substance and has a significant potential for both psychological and physical dependence and abuse.
There are many different types of hydrocodone pain medicine available, most of which contain a combination of hydrocodone and
acetaminophen (the narcotic is not available by itself; it is always combined with at least one other active ingredient). Dosing instructions vary depending on the particular product, but hydrocodone is typically taken every four hours as needed for pain.
You should talk to your healthcare provider before taking hydrocodone products if you are pregnant or have liver disease,
hypothyroidism, kidney disease, or a history of alcohol or drug abuse. You should also tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking before using hydrocodone, to help prevent negative drug interactions.
