The
fentanyl patch (
Duragesic®) is a medication licensed for pain relief. Specifically, it can help treat moderate-to-severe chronic pain in people who are not having adequate relief with other pain medications. Although it is generally a safe medication,
fentanyl patches do pose certain risks.
It's important to note that certain problems can develop in people using these patches. For example, fentanyl patches may cause serious problems, including death, if used in children or other people for whom the medication was not prescribed. These medicated skin patches contain a strong narcotic opioid, which should only be used by people who are accustomed to the effects of opioid medications.
Other safety concerns involve side effects like a slow heart rate, slow breathing, and
constipation. Also, you may not be able to use this pain medication if you have certain health conditions, such as
asthma or a bowel obstruction.
