Dosage of Fentanyl Patch for Chronic Pain

A healthcare provider will take several factors into consideration when determining your dosage of the fentanyl patch (Duragesic®) for chronic pain treatment. Some of these factors include:

  • The type and severity of your pain
  • The type and dose of other pain medications you have taken
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

People should only use fentanyl patches if they are already taking an opioid pain medication, at a dose equivalent to at least fentanyl patch 25 mcg. Typically, a healthcare provider will start you off with a low fentanyl patch dosage and slowly increase it as needed. It can take up to six days after your first dose increase to feel maximum pain relief. Therefore, additional dose increases should be made after at least six days have passed, or after two patches have been worn.

This medicated skin patch is worn continuously for three days (72 hours). After three days, the old patch is removed and a new one is applied to a different skin site.
