Can I Buy Generic Darvon-N?

Darvon-N is made by Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Although it is an older medication (and although the patents for Darvon-N have expired), no generic versions of this medication are available in the United States.
When Will Generic Darvon-N Be Available?
This is a difficult question to answer. There are no legal reasons that a generic version of Darvon-N cannot be made. It is not clear why manufacturers have not chosen to make a generic version of this drug. Perhaps it would not be profitable for a manufacturer to go through the effort of formulating and seeking approval for a generic version of Darvon-N, especially since the medication has a relatively small market.
Is Propoxyphene a Generic Darvon-N?
Although Darvon-N is not available in generic form, generic versions of regular Darvon
® (
propoxyphene hydrochloride) are available. In most situations, these products could be considered similar enough to Darvon-N to be used interchangeably, although a new prescription would be required before switching from Darvon-N to Darvon (or to a generic version of Darvon).
Darvon-N contains
propoxyphene napsylate, compared to regular Darvon, which contains propoxyphene hydrochloride. There are a few important differences between the two forms of propoxyphene. Propoxyphene napsylate is less soluble in water, compared to the hydrochloride form, perhaps making it less prone to abuse by injection.
