Drug Interactions With Acetaminophen With Codeine

Antipsychotics, antidepressants, and other narcotics or opiates are some of the medications that may cause drug interactions with acetaminophen with codeine. These drug interactions can increase your risk for developing serious side effects, such as memory loss, extreme drowsiness, or difficulty breathing. To help prevent acetaminophen with codeine interactions, tell your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking before using the pain reliever.

 

Acetaminophen With Codeine Interactions: An Overview

Acetaminophen with codeine (Tylenol® with Codeine) can potentially interact with a number of other medications, particularly medications that tend to cause drowsiness or sedation. Some of the medicines that may lead to acetaminophen with codeine drug interactions include:
 
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Antidepressants
  • Antihistamines (including many allergy, motion sickness, and sleep medications)
  • Antipsychotics
  • Barbiturate medications, including, but not limited to:

 

    • Butalbital (Fioricet®, Fiorinal®)
    • Pentobarbital (Nembutal®)
    • Phenobarbital (Luminal®)
    • Secobarbital (Seconal®)

 

  • Benzodiazepines, such as:

 

 

  • Other narcotics or opiates, such as morphine (MS Contin®, MSIR®) or oxycodone (OyxIR®, OxyContin®)
  • Other products that contain acetaminophen, including many prescription and non-prescription pain killers and cold or cough products
  • Sleep medications.
