Acetaminophen With Codeine Drug Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when
acetaminophen with codeine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Alcohol
You should avoid alcohol while taking
acetaminophen with codeine. Alcohol interacts with codeine, the narcotic component of acetaminophen with codeine, potentially increasing the risk of serious side effects, such as extreme drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Alcohol also interacts with the acetaminophen (
Tylenol®) component of the medication, increasing the risk of liver damage
(see Tylenol and Alcohol for more information).
Antidepressants
Combining acetaminophen with codeine with an
antidepressant could increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking acetaminophen with codeine with an antidepressant, as you may need to be monitored more closely.
Antihistamines
Many antihistamines cause significant drowsiness and can cause serious problems when used in combination with other medications that cause drowsiness, such as acetaminophen with codeine. Check with your healthcare provider before taking acetaminophen with codeine with an antihistamine, including non-prescription antihistamines in allergy, cold/cough, sleep, and motion sickness products.
Antipsychotic Medications
Combining an
antipsychotic medication with acetaminophen with codeine can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking acetaminophen with codeine with an antipsychotic medication.
